He pursued his education at Royal College Colombo and later obtained a Bachelor's in Business Administration from Lewis and Clark College Portland USA. On his return to Sri Lanka after graduation, he started his career as a financial analyst at Central Finance and later HSBC Sri Lanka where he went on to become a Credit Operations Manager before giving up the corporate world to embark on his calling for politics.
